    Mancini? He's a cyclist - rides a Pinarello I believe.

I've been there, the Manchester facility. Shedloads of fun if a bit repetitive after an hour. :)

Former Newcastle player Robbie Elliot is now a keen cyclist. He's undertaking a hell of trek too to raise money for The Bobby Robson Foundation. Well worth a look.

Geoff Thomas after being diagnosed with Leukaemia.

Rode the entire 2005 TDF route, IIRC.

Fabrizio Ravanelli (ex Italian international, Juventus and Middlesbrough) started his own cycling team after he retired from football...think he is the training partner of Bennati during the off season
  • Alan Sugar. Used to own Spurs. Does ride a Pinarello.

I heard that injured footballers were told to get out on a bike to keep their fitness up without doing any damage.

So, I expect that most of them have been on a bike at some time...

I know 0% about football but from what I read in the media John Terry seems to be fond of the odd bike.

That'll be static bikes you're thinking about. Footballers are prized assets for clubs, so they would be
very reluctant to encourage them to ride on roads, where there's a (albeit small) possibility of them
being knocked off their bikes and sustaining injuries.

"Wayne Rooney was knocked off his bike in a hit-and-run incident whilst out training today. There were no witnesses, but Rooney described the offending car as a sky blue Aston Martin DBS .."

As all North American sports do the NHL (ice hockey to us mere mortals) holds a scouting combine every year before the 'draft' and this normally includes an hours session on a static bike which basically simulates stop-start hockey game conditions sort of like an interval session I guess. It enables the scouts/coaches/medical people to identify how quickly a player can recover from certain exertions too. Interestingly in the last couple of years this test has shown up a couple of kids with severe heart defects who shouldn't be doing much more than carrying a bag of groceries.

Some of what they look for is referred to here:

He should give that to me, at least it matches my club kit (unlike his Garmin mess!)
