Hi all, new here, well newly signed up anyway.
Wondered if one of you clever people could help me to start working out what i should do with regard to introducing a forum to my clubs website. I am pretty dim about these things and would be very grateful for some pointers as to what I need and where I might get it. Thanks in advance,
Tom Worthington

Have a look at phpBB

Theres a few bods on here have had experience setting them up - not the mods, don't ask them, theyre fecking useless.
here it is in action with 2 clubs by me - same software - different look.

From memory I think you need an apache server and access to a sql database - your host will have all those options for you.The dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns
momentarily from the herd and thinks for himself.0 -
Vbulletin is a great system to use0

phpBB is ok for a free bit of software, but if you really want something great then spend a bit on vBulletin. Both are really easy to setup and most decent hosts will provide 1 click installation of these (and other) forum packages.0

For reference: This forum runs phpbb3.0 -

Why not use FB?0

Our Yaxleyriders.co.uk site is mainly a FB based forum now and because of the ease of going on that site on mobile etc. it is getting harder and harder to point traffic at the main website.
We have actually created a bit of a monster with it. 150 members on FB, about 10 regular posters and fewer unique visits to the website ... beware! !0 -
Don't use this one, I have to and don't really like it, not flexible enough http://www.webwiz.co.uk/web-wiz-forums/I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0

All great info, thanks again everyone.
Not had time to get going on our forum yet, but i will do so soon and I'll let you know how it goes.
Not going with FB because (being a social misfit...) I personally don't use it.0 -
If you are looking for hosted www.proboards.com is a good place to start.0

If your hosting is Linux with CPanel you most likely will be able to install PHPBB with a couple of clicks. (make sure your hosting allows you a mySQL DB that you'll need to run it)... if you want cheap hosting that does do it then look at wiserhosting.com WebStart for 25quid a year, that'll do it for fact as I describe.
Ive done it and had it all branded exactly as I want in about 30mins with all the settings as I want them, admin stuff and mod stuff setup and everything tested.
I got my own header, produced it in HTML with how I wanted all the logos etc at the top and dropped that html into the template and that was that, I do have the advantage of coding websites since 1998 though.0
