Which cable

I'm finally giving my poor, abused stumpy a little attention. I'm going to replace the cassette and chain and will order like for like off the net. The gear cables are causing me a little stress though. Are shimano cables compatible with the sram x-9 shifters on the bike? Do they have a universal end stop to go in the shifter?

CRC do a shimano mtb shift cable set for about twenty notes.
