Mudguard help!

I have a Genesis cdf gathering dust in my hall instead of fulfilling it's designated task of being my commuter.

The weather is shocking! I commuted all last winter with no issues on my crappy hybrid with full guards then road bike but wanted a better commuter. However, no guards and no changing facilities at work (gents bog excepted) mean the car is getting more use.

The cdf is fine and a lovely ride and I am running schwalbe Sammy Slick 35mm tyres on it for it's off road appearances and general comfort. This means full guards are out of the equation sadly. I want some advice on a solution to stop me getting p***ed through.

My options appear to be - Zefal Swan/Croozer combo - which has the advantage of being cheap and the Swan keeps the rear dry or SKS race blades XL. I am resigned to all the filth of manchesters roads being on the bike but will the race blades keep my feet dry or should I just spend £8 at Decathlon and use the Zefal combo?

Just put race blades on my Focus Cross - will let you know how I get on tomorrow in what is predicted to be an epic day's weather.

  • I won't hold my breath for the results (bit too long and breathing IS useful).

How easy are the 'Blades to fit? Also did you tape your fork and stays to stop rub?

They were pretty straight forward to install, took about 10 minutes - they come with little plastic bits to protect the frame and i used those - will probably have them off in a few weeks and go for something more permanent.

(compared to cruds they are a doddle)

Doesn't the CDF come with any eyelets for a rack and guards?

    Have a look here.

  • cdf IS all rack and guard friendly (although the disc brakes complicate matters a bit). However the Sammy Slicks are a bit porky and there is no chance of getting a close fitting guard on. I know this because I have just wasted some cash on buying some...

I could always stick some 28mm semi slicks on I suppose, but I like the cross tyres.

I have 35mm Maxxis Raze on my Revolution cross, I have guards and they're rather snug, but they fit ok.

When I put the road wheels with 28's on, there's daylight between the edge of the guard and the tyre.
