GIANT TALON 1 2013 or SCOTT SCALE 660 2013

Hi all,
I'm looking for a bit of buying advice on the 2 mentioned bilkes.
My 2011 Black & White Rockhopper was unfortunately stolen by some scumbag who burgled my house last week and now I’m stuck on what bike to get with the insurance money. I know the 2012 and 2013 Rockhoppers have dropped their specs compared to the 2011 models so I've ruled them out. I also know it's not just about the looks but I really liked the paint job on my Rockhopper and that’s why the Scott caught my eye as it looks similar. I will be using the bike mainly on road/path with some off roading now and then. I don't think I need to go to a 29er for what I will be using the bike for. My top budget is a grand.
So out of the two which would you think is the one to go for? Any advice greatly appreciated.
Cheers!

I have to use Wheelies through the insurance.0 -
The Scale is the racier of the two, the Talon a bit more relaxed in the riding position and designed for slightly harder riding. Both are similarly specced.0

Thanks.
So you would say for general road/path/track and more speed and acceleration the Scott would be the one to go for.0 -

How do the two bike's specs scale up against my original bike.

Sorry I've been trying to do comparrisons and research on certain parts but it's good to here from someone with first hand knowledge. Am I right in thinking people got a lot for their money with the 2011 Rockhopper at £800. If I'm getting the Scott or the GIant for a grand I don't want to think certain parts will be downgraded to what I had.
Thanks again for any help.0 -
The Rockhopper is of slightly less spec, ie the fork and drivetrain, you are getting a better bike. But even better would be bikes from the likes of Boardman.0
-
Cool.
The trouble is I have to get the bike through Wheelies, that's the Insurance rules. Would be nice to test them first if I can find another bike shop that has one in stock before I order from them online. I have the choice of either £495 in cash or choose a bike from their site up to £900, anything over £900 the extra amount is 20% off. Thought that was quite good for an insurance company as they didn't kick up a fuss about anything.
Thanks for your help mate. Appreciated0 -
Wheelies are usually quite expensive and rather limited, but you'd still be getting a better bike - the Scott looks ideal, similar to the Hopper in style, but lighter with those better parts.0
-
Yeah I was thinking that too.
Great! and pretty much the same colour scheme too.
You've made my mind up for me now. Scott it is.

It's a hell of a lot of bike for "mainly on road/path with some off roading now and then," but if insurance are coughing up for it then why the hell not?0
-
Lol, do you think? I don't want to downgrade though and I like the fact it's similar to what I had with a few higher specs.0

Ok, now I went to order the Scott Scale 660 and noticed Wheelies have suddenly put the Specialized 2012 Carve Expert from £1,300 to £999.

I know this is 29er which I've never been on before but am I getting a lot more bike with the Specialized for that price?0 -
For what you ride id take the 29er each time, even if it is a Generalized0

Sorry for the hi-jack everyone  , but also considering the Giant...
here: http://cyclesolutions-shop.co.uk/p56319/Giant-Talon-1-2013-Mountain-Bike.aspx
I'm intending on trail riding (Afan, Cwmcarn etc) next year, the Scott is cheaper from out cycle to work suppier, and as far as I can tell the spec on this bike is pretty good? I'm itching to order but am holding off to "try before I buy" : )
my OP: http://www.bikeradar.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=20005&t=12880802
Any advice, or are am I thinking too much about it?

Hey all,
Just thought I'd follow up for anyone else looking to get either of these -
I went for the Talon 1 and although I've only been riding it a few weeks now, I absolutely love it.
Granted its a big step up from my previous bike, and I'm by no means an authority on bikes, but it rides smooth, is comfortable in most situations and eats the miles with ease (this, coming from a 5ft6 12st guy!)
The spec seems good from all my research, and although I wasn't a fan of the poploc remote at first, I'm enjoying it now. (seemed fiddly to lock into place when it arrived -- sorted with a squirt of trusty ol' WD40 :P )
HTH someone.
