Fitting a chain

I took the Shimano 10 speed 5700 chain off my bike to clean it, do these chains have an inner an outer side, one side of the chain has writing on the links the other side has little slits in the links.

The chains are meant to directional I think. I hope you have shimano special joining pin or a master link to re join.

Did you find the noise from the back end?

i will be using a Connex speed link, just found out the writing on the chain faces outward slits inward.
I took your advise and removed the cassette and put some oil down the side of the freehub body and also put some wet lube on the chain and the noise has gone. Happy chappie.

If I remember correctly,the connex link should be fitted a certain way. There should be a diagram supplied with it .

Yea it has to be fitted a certain way, "frown down"

Assuming you are fitting it to the upper chain run. On the bottom run this would become "smile up".

Some confusion here (probably caused by me)! I am refering to the frown or concave radius in the edge of the side plate, in which case frown down on the upper run so that it rides over the curve of the sprocket. If you mean the frown of the elongated hole, then it is down on the lower run as you say.
