Snapped rear shifter cable 105
Hi Folks,
Sorry if ive missed a great thread on this but my search was a litlle thin on info.
Situation is as follows, rear shifter with snapped gear cable, cable barrel still buried inside shifter, cable disconnected completely. Got a new cable but quite perplexed as to how to get the remains out at the moment.
105 5700 shifter about 15 months old, any help most welcome. Looked at a few youtube vids but cant seem to get one that looks quite as mashed as my setup.
Read one response on a forum which seemed to indicate that the shifter was now knacked! Hope this is not the case.
Quite happy to go LBS route but would be nice to know that this is a last resort and would be great to DIY this one.
Cheers
Willie

Can you not get the cable barrel out with a pair of nose pliers? Has the top broken off so a parts left in?
If thats the case, slowly wedge a different sized allen key or small screwdriver into the hole and twist to get it out.0 -
I had the same problem on two occasions. On the first I was unable to do it myself and had to take it to the shop. Second occasion I did it myself but it took a lot of fiddling. Needle nose pliers, spray lube and/or compressed air may help.
Potentially it can knacker the shifter by jamming it, but not necessarily.CAPTAIN BUCKFAST'S CYCLING TIPS - GUARANTEED TO WORK! 1 OUT OF 10 RACING CYCLISTS AGREE!0 -
Thanks for the replys, will get a pic up tomorrow so you can point to where to poke the pliers. At the moment, it looks like the barrel is quite deep within the mechanism, too deep to access.

Can't say I've ever done it but I wonder if you pushed a new cable through from the exit point on the shifter it would track back through and push the barrel out ?0 -
Have you removed the rubber hood? there is a black plate held on with a single small phillips screw that can be removed easily that will give you better access to the internals. It can be seen in the tech doc:

hi folks,
Just a shout to say thanks to ratsbeyfus, that link to the shimano tech doc did the trick.
Very simple job when you know that taking off the cover is the thing to do and wont cause the shifter to explode into pieces.
