Turn by Turn directions on Garmin 800/gpx

I've got the Garmin Edge 800 with OS UK 1:50,000 maps, downloaded a GPX file at the weekend but it doesn't give me turn by turn directions, any ideas?

I understand there are 2 or even 3 types of GPX files - tracks and Routes, and also way points. When planning a trip I normally use bikeroutetoaster to add course points, download the gpx file to my PC, upload it to Garmin basecamp, convert the route (which contains the cue sheet entries i.e. directions) to a track (which adds in the "breadcrumb" details) and then I get the directions. But I'm guessing most downloadable GPX files are tracks so contain the breadcrumb details but no cue sheet entries. How does one go about adding in cue sheet entries or getting the Garmin to follow the map and add in directions?

Reading this http://ridewithgps.com/edge_800 it says I should get turn by turn directions if I have OSM base maps installed, no idea if I have this if using the 1:50,000 map its disabling base maps?

On my Edge 800, turn by turn is not a default setting. You need to go to Courses in the 800, and IIRC, tap the spanner and then turn on TBT. You will have to do this for each course you download to the 800.

Someone more knowledgeable than me may know how to set TBT as a default!

  • I've not been able to get routes created with RideWithGPS to do turn by turn. I'm probably doing it wrong!

    What I do is this

    1) Create route with http://www.bikeroutetoaster.com/Course.aspx
    2) Go to the "Summary" tab on the bikeroutetoaster.com site and in the Download box give it a course name and tick the box for "Add Course Point Warnings"
    3) Choose download to file > TCX
    4) Copy the TCX file to the Garmin device New Files folder
    5) On the 800, choose Menu>Courses
    6) Choose the course you want and then click the spanner icon
    7) Choose the following settings: Turn Guidance = On, Virtual Partner = Off, Off Course Warnings = On. Under Map Display: Always Display = On, Color = I use blue, use whatever you like, Course Points = On
8 ) When you're ready to start, click Go

    Cheers

That's same as me, except I download the GPX file and convert in Basecamp. I could cut out one step and just download as a TCX file instead....thanks.

You cannot turn it on to be a default setting unfortunately.

Assuming the 800 deals with routes and courses the same way as my 705.....

A route file (GPX) will give turn by turn directions but no breadcrumb trail
A course file (TCX) will not give turn by turn directions but will give a breadcrumb trail

If you create a GPX and TCX file of your route AND navigate both at the same time, you'll get both on screen. I don't bother with the GPX route file. Following a breadcrumb trail is enough if you zoom in/out at the trickier bits.

My 705 DOES give turn by turn if I create it in bikeroutetoaster and transfer it to the 705 with the "Acc Course Point Warnings" enabled and that gives turn by turn warnings and instructions. It get most of them correct but occasionally its necessary to add them in manually on the route creation page and choosing the appropriate warning (right, left, straight etc).

Yes I know that already :? Back on topic...the issue I have is when downloading "standard" gpx files, how to I get turn by turn directions then?

I do it this way, upload the gpx file into Bike Toaster etc, edit the settings, give it a name and save it as a TCX (coarse file) to my Garmin 800.
As stated above, you have to turn on the "turn by turn" directions for each course file
  • My way is slightly more complex but always gets the right result first time.

Two windows or computers csreen if you have two - one with the GPX on it, one with brt and I simply recreate in BRT the entire route from scratch. Even for large routes it doesn't take more than 5 minutes and then I use the TCX file to follow the route, with instructions. Doing it that way, forces you to familiarise yourself with the route slightly which is better than blindly following someone elses route blind and slowing down at every junction as you have no idea what comes next.

    Simples. It really is.

That's what I've been doing to date, but I just wonder if there is an easy way to download a gpx file (for example from my cycle club website for the Sunday ride) and put it onto my Garmin so that it shows not just the route, but gives directions too. I will defo change to downloading the tcx file rather than converting gpx-tcx via basecamp.

Does the breadcrumb bit also work on a 200?
