Tips for truing wheels

Does anyone know any good ways of doing this without buying an expensive stand? I have disc brakes btw. I have tried to do it by eye but it's quite difficult for me. It seems to be something I have to do every few months so would prefer doing it myself.

  • keep the wheels in the frame/fork and use cable ties around chainstays/forks adjacent to the rim - trim so they can be rotated in and out against the rim. Use these as the datum to true the wheel (lateral truing)

You can true on the bike to sufficient accuracy. Ive never used zipties as guides but its a good idea.
If your wheels need re-truing every few months, something is wrong. Check the tension and pre-stress the spokes.
On a poor wheel, you have to balance tension and trueness.
