Hi,

Am new to the forum but have joined to gain advice for people more in the know and to share what I know! ( not so much!)

Anyhow, having finally departed with my beloved specialized rockhopper disc comp (2008/9) I have recently bought a 2012 version of the same bike. Only thing is I was a little surprised by specialized moving from rockshox trusty Tora to the suntour XCR Sr. To me, seems a little low end? Lack of rebound adjsutment etc. I do trails round about glossop and every now and then do more substantial stuff- such as Grizedale etc.

What I would like to know is?

Is there any point upgrading? If so, to what and are there any forks that will really go well with the bike.

Bike is practically unused so would hope to get a few quid for the suntours.

Budget is an issue, I also don't want to sacrifice too much weight just for occasional hardcore stuff.

Hope I am making sense thanks in anticipation for your time!

Simston

Why did you get rid of the other one?

The XCR is not a bad fork, has custom internals so works better than stock. But a RS Recon would be better, even in basic form.

Got rid of the other one while still in okay nick. Sold it for 265... Bought as new RH for 460..... Seemed like a good deal all in all?

    Thanks

A RH frame is a RH frame around those years. The difference might have been better on a fork upgrade, that's all I was thinking. But if you're happy that's all that matters.

Okies , Thanks for prompt reply- just found it bit less resilient than my RH tora forks

Mm get ya drift... Gt original on BTW scheme- owes me nothing, but haven't spent a penny on anything like chain set, or brakes, gears etc....just thought would renew while am ahead... Wasn't really prepared for a shock upgrade tho!

It's a nicer looking bike these days, for sure:)

Either sell the XCR quick while you can advertise it as nearly new and maximise your money to put towards something else, or take care of it for as long as possible, the XCR on the Spesh has custom tuning as SS says which make it better than the norm, however the seals are pants so its worth getting some thick grease in the bushings under the seals and keeping the stanchions lubed. the seals neither seal nor run smoothly on the stanchions without trashing them!

I just sold an un-used XCR from the wifes bike and after listing it three times on ebay I got £23 for it. No one buys them as an upgrade so they are worth bugger all

LOL, I sold an XCM for more than that on the bay......however that reinforces the take care of it as long as possible route!

  • Hi simston,

I'm pretty new on the forum too, but have been finding answers to questions on here for a while now!

My last bike was an 09 rockhopper, I replaced the stock dart 3's for a bargain sun tour radon air fork. There not going to win any awards, but if your looking for controllable and cost effective I recommend them. The Saturday help we have at work has the bike now, and despite thrashing it the forks are still going strong.

Not sure why you went for the swap tho, I loved the RH 09, only reason I changed is got lured onto a 29 er!
  • Cheers for all your advice folks. Think I will have to bite the bullet and go for recons or xc32. Told the lad who got my RH 09 he had a goon un... Let you know what I go for!!!

    Thanks

    Simon
  • Would these be the right move and spec?

Not sure about air or spring and also spec suitability for my bike?
