Best 'Non-Cycling' accessory

Not counting equipment or clothing or anything directly related to the bicycle what are good accessories for the road cyclist? The best for me would probably be an 1:50000 scale Ordnance Survey Landranger map of the local area. Most people have never been down many of the country lanes within a 5 mile radius of their house. Sit and plan the next days ride while the wife is watching Corrie..!!

Also great for mountain biking regarding bridleways although a 1:25000 scale may be better.

  • Ziplock bags.

Waterprood, and brilliant for keeping small stuff together, such as "always carry" tools and parts, so they don't need to be fished out of pockets and bags when needed, and are dead easy to pick up before going out, plus they cost naff all.

    Box of plasters.

These are forever fighting in the struggle against road rash caused by my evil cleats being clipped in. I'm sure my pedals are the spawn of satan and are trying to kill me.

    +1 for ziplock bags

Rubber bands are useful too (or in my case a cut up MTB inner tube) for holding my pump, multi-tool, and chain-tool together so they sit nicely in my jersey.
  • Don't know if these count..

£10 note in the saddle bag
Couple of cable ties (for the mudguards)

    You bet they do.
    Money for the cafe stop.
Plastic cable tie saved my touring holiday once when the metal strip connecting my pannier rack to the seat stay sheared off. Lasted hundreds of miles until I got home. Brilliant piece of kit.

  • I've once done a roadside repair on a cheap jersey using cable ties x3 . The zip bust and I forced the ties through the material around the zip. Looked bloody ridiculous but kept me fairly warm and decent.

    Cheap jersey!
