I'm keen to do it but the key to it will be how well organised it is.

Does this look like a rather expensive audax??

really the only sensible thing to do once you reach Edinburgh is to turn around and cycle home - none of this faffing around with trains or coaches or whatever.

Yes it does!

You'd be better off with http://www.londonedinburghlondon.com/ audax. The UK's version of the Paris-Brest-Paris but with fewer French people.

Any other organiser attempting to run a long distance event in the same year as the LEL clearly has not done their homework and probably go bankrupt.
