Having searched for a while I cannot find a definitive answer as to what length cage I need for my two bikes, some articles suggest long cage but the manufacturer description says medium cage is for double chainring set ups. The specs are as follows.

Bike No.1 38/24 double cranks 11/36 cassette - this will be a Sram x9 type 2 mech

Bike No.2 36/22 double cranks 11/32 cassette - this will be a Shimano SLX shadow + mech

Can anyone confirm which length cage I will need for each bike?

thanks :)

  • Look in the FAQs it is all there. It's just maths and seeing what capacity a mech 'does'
  • SRAM X9 10-speed Long Cage, 47T capacity, 14T max front chainring difference;
    SRAM X9 10-speed Medium Cage, 35T capacity, 14T max front chainring difference;

    EDIT:

    Shimano SLX Shadow Plus 10-speed Long Cage, 43T capacity, 22T max front chainring difference;
    Shimano SLX Shadow Plus 10-speed Medium Cage, 35T capacity, 22T max front chainring difference.

    Both long cages will work according to calculations as well as medium cage for the Shimano SLX Shadow Plus:

    (38 - 24)T + (36 - 11)T = 39T,

    (36 - 22)T + (32 - 11)T = 35T.
