How do you measure fork travel?

I am planning to swap my suspension forks (Marzochi Bomber, cheap, basic) for a rigid steel suspension adjusted fork, as a bit of a touring project. To get the right replacement I need to identify the actual travel on my existing forks and not sure how to do this? I'm assuming its not just the gap from the rubber sleeve to the top? Thanks.
