You're a domestique

So you're a domestique (up to you what sort, climber, rouleur etc.) at the top of your game and still on an upwards curve and being courted by all the pro tour teams to sign a new multi-year contract.
Which team from the current peloton do you sign for and why?

I like the idea of sleeping in the same bed every night.

(or Orica-Greenedge because I liked their 'call me maybe' vid)

The one that pays me the most (and that includes having leaders who will get me bonuses).

I'm a domestique. I'm not a star and won't be getting star wages. I've got maybe ten years if I'm lucky and then I'm in the real world with no qualifications. It's no time to be picky.

Best combination of pay + likelihood of riding the big races. All things being equal probably Garmin or Sky. I don't speak foreign.

BMC – they’ve got some class riders and I’d gladly live half the year (or more) in Ticino, like Evans does.
    or
FDJ – they’ve got good young riders, Madiot as DS, and I like their bikes (Lapierre)
  • Garmin, because I think what Vaughters is doing is a good thing.
  • OPQS because I'd like the adulation of the Belgian fans.

Depends if I could ride the coat tails of a superstar and build up my profile and earning potential that way.

Shurrup Chasey you'd go wherever Tommeke is and you know it! ;)

If it wasn't for that pesky restraining order!

Whoever is offering the most benjamins.
Fckin' Quintana … that creep can roll, man.
  • It's boring but for job security/money i'd probably go to Sky.

Ten years is not a long career, ideals go out of the window when you have a mortgage to pay and kids to feed.

On a sporting level i'd say OPQS, reckon I could be a pretty useful windbreak on the windy roads of Flanders. If I did well enough I might get a chance to lead the team at KBK or GW, maybe a Tour stage, i'd settle for that.

What about if you started losing form and you needed to do well in a few crits and a 3 day in northern Europe and your soigneur says he can help....oh hang on that's all been done

    Cavs lead out man.

Last man in the train so I'm in all the photos.

You just want the first and biggest hug from Cav :D
  • I'd go for for AG2R. Quite fancy riding for a French team- more likely to be clean than other continental European teams and I reckon a decent domestique could actually progress up the ranks there as well.
  • From a boringly practical point of view, it would be difficult to construct a strong argument against joining Sky. I'm no fanboy of theirs but being a Brit on a British team would no doubt make life so much easier in countless ways. Plus I get the impression that Sky would look after you so much better than most other teams, leaving you free to concentrate on riding and performing. So while I might kid myself I fancy one of Vaconsoleil's Bianchis, or have a romantic vision of life in Italy with Liquigas, in reality I'm such a mummy's boy that I'd no doubt muck it up! Sky for me please.

He doesn't have to be on the same team though. He can be to Boonen what Tiralongo is to Contador.

I'd never get bothered for results, I'd get all the best gear and some op style advice too.

  • Cofidis - nice bikes and no pressure to perform!

As everyone else said, you'd probably follow the money. Although that might not be a simple equation, because if someone was guaranteeing more race opportunities for less money that might sway it. Put another way, would you rather ride for Sky and get few chances to race big races or would you take less greenbacks and ride for Saur Sojasun with Brice Feillu in the Tour de France?

Whichever team allowed me to ride in the sun, hide from the wind, and never worry about the cold or wet! :D

In reality Sky have to be an attractive option due to their set up and the level of support they offer, but you'd need to be a bit of a goat.
If you're a classics man then OPQ.

    Specialized Lululemon.

Yeah, but as a domestique you are supposed to ride in front not behind!

I'd go to AG2R and just ride for myself like all the other domestiques there.

    Be a combination of:
support/care riders would provide - improved health and support for training
Who's I'd be riding for - i.e likelyhood of victories/bonus the team would pickup
Stablility - i.e the team least likely to have dramas in supporting the team. Supporting a rider from the same nation would also help aid my recognition slightly

With all that in mind. As I'm british I'd say Sky. If not I'll be looking to jump in with Garmin or Quickstep

Hmm, not sure I'd last very long with them. I'm guessing none of them would want to room with me.

On the other hand, you'd probably be the ideal model to give authenticity to Lululemon's plaid running kilt. :)
