Hi everyone,

I just got my new bike today and went for a ride, the bike is now quite muddy, and I would just like to see if anyone recommends any particular bike cleaner? I don't want a cleaner which could damage the paint, or the fork seal etc for obvious reasons!

Thanks for your help,

Patrick :D

Water. And a hose pipe. (Not a high pressure washer)
Otherwise Muc Off, or washing up liquid

  • Water with some fairy liquid in it has always kept my bike clean... The only 'special' stuff I use is chain lube.

Low preasure hose pipe and a sponge with some warm water with appropriate lube for the chain

  • Fenwick's Bike Cleaner is very good and can be used concentrated as a degreaser.

I'm using fenwicks diluted 1:10 as per the instructions. It seems ok but I am pretty sure the muc off was more effective (and more expensive too though). I thought I read that it is not a good idea to use washing up liquid as it has salt in it which I suppose would only be an issue if you did not rinse it off properly.

Re. degreasing the chain I just stick the cheapest lemon cleaner i can get a hold of (daisy brand from tesco currently) in to my park tools chain cleaner and it does a wonderful job.

I have to say - i have become a lot less precious about bike hygiene of late. I do tend to clean the chain but do not really bother which much else

the Kids- couple of pounds each and they do a great job!

edit- if im washing the car too i sometimes use snow foam on the bike too - it brings the brown seat and grips back to the proper white colour!

Washing up liquid normally does the job but make sure you rinse it off properly.

For special occasions if the bike is really dirty I use Hope Sh1t Shifter. Found it to worked better than Muc off, although that was a few years ago before Muc off's "new improved formula"
