best way to travel with a bike?

i am looking to go up to my Grandmas house soon an wanted to take my Allez to cycle around the London area what would be the best and safest way to carry the bike on the outside of the car. we have a volvo s60 and the bike with luggage will not go inside so how should i carry it. i have roof bars for the car so could anyone reccoment some fairly cheap roof carrying thig.

It's either roof bars with a stand up bike rack/holder, you'll need bars to go across the the roof and then the rack on top, can buy these singularly. Or bike rack for the boot (cheapest option). Or get a tow bar fitted (most expensive option). Halfords/Volvo/eBay/countless websites..... Depends on your budget. Any will do the job, from the cheapest to the most expensive. Just search the net....0

If you already have the roof bars I recommend these

I've used them and find they hold the bike very securely and are better than the stand up racks as these clamp the tube and can rub...but you will have to find room for the front wheel inside....unless you go for extra expense and buy the holder for that to go on the roof bars

Put it in the car. If there's not enough room then take less luggage or fewer passengers.
Or, as mallorcajeff said, ride it. If you need to take luggage get a bike trailer. If you are planning on taking passengers then buy them bikes.
