Specialized Romin, if Carlsberg made saddles it wouldn't be a Romin, probably the worst saddle in the world closely followed by a Toupe.

As you can see by your first two replies.......One man's armchair is another man's block of wood, it's a quest, i think that someone quoted the holy grail on this forum.
  • For me it'd be Brooks Swallow if new, Middlemore B89N if vintage - which I have.

  • I use a Fizik Arione and I can definately reccomend it...if youre the right shape. The others in the range all get good reviews too so if you get the right one, you cant go wrong.
  • charge spoon for me...i have it on both bikes...cheap as chips too...

No simple answer as what one person will swear is the best another will say is awful.

Best idea I have seen is some of the specialised saddles ( and possibly other makes) being available in different widths to accommodate differing "sit bones" widths. Note I am not referring to the difference between a male and female saddle which tend to be widely different.

Some shops have a guide that you sit on that will leave an impression of your sit bones from which they can work out what width saddle you need.

I am assuming that your bike saddle height is setup appropriately ( nothing worse than rolling on a saddle) and that you have the padded shorts already.

For the record one of my favourites over many years is this one http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=27251

    +1
  • The only completely comfortable one for me is an Adamo - not exactly conventional, but lots of folks love them once over the first few weeks of sore sit bones.

No numbness at all afterwards - not even a smidgen.
  • Thinking of getting a Spec Romin Pro due to numbness and pain in soft tissue area - but have read I probably need a new seat post (Carerra Mtn bike). How much do I need to spend on the post? I've seen them costing the same as the saddle at £100+ which seems too much.

P.S. Waiting til the Spring to buy my new road bike.

    .

Sounds like hell! I'd rather have something comfortable from day one.

I've just bought a Spesh Romin Expert. Got my ar5e measured at a couple of places and the verdict from both was that I should go for a 143.

15 miles into my first ride I thought I'd made a mistake. It was fine initially and then started to hurt. After 32 miles I was fairly sure that was it - sit bones were very sore. However, 3 days later I tried again and was fine after 15 miles. A further 32 miles a couple of days later was also fine. 40 miles yesterday, no problem at all.

The general consensus is that if you get the right width, this is a good saddle - but you'd never think that by looking at it.

So very pleased with it - Romin for me.

    San Marco Regal-e.

A fantastically comfortable saddle, often over looked and highly under rated. Do a forum search for more info.

I just bought the Spesh Romin Evo Expert a couple of days ago, and it has solved my numbness problems I was experiencing in my nether-regions in one foul-swoop, reasonably priced I thought at £80 compared to some of the other Selle/Fizik saddles out there.

+1 for good bike fit. I was getting a lot of discomfort and tried one or two eventually going for a Fizik Antares braided. Very minimalist, very light, very expensive and marginally more comfortable than the budget saddle I'd been using before. Having had a pro bike fit I barely notice the saddle now. The only downside is there's less motivation to stand up on the pedals from time to time!

  • First time out on my new specialized Romin Pro today - bit sore on the sit bones as its a bit harder than my previous saddle but I'm sure they'll get used to it after a few rides. The numbness/pain that always set in after 10 miles seems to be a thing of the past thank god!

I wouldn't worry. I've ridden with mine twice so far (40 miles on Sunday and 12 miles yesterday) and it made my sit-bones sore too, but my previous saddle was a softer stock Giant saddle and the Spesh Romin Pro is harder so that's the be expected, will probably take 2-3 weeks for my bum to get fully used to it I would expect!

I also use a Specialized Romin 143, and like someone else said earlier they certainly don't look too comfy but I guess the shape works for me.

I also use a Selle Italia c2 on the mtb which I love, very comfy. However after an off at Keilder over the weekend it now has 2 nasty looking scuffs on it

Just an update, 2 weeks on (100+ miles in 6 rides) and I feel no pain whatsoever! No numbness, no sit bones pain. My best buy so far!

For me it's my new San Marco Rolls. Came on my latest bike (see sig) and it's really comfy. They're £80 to buy now (I've got the titanium-railed version) but since it came with my bike I'm really happy!
