I am looking at upgrading my 5 yr old Trek. It is an aluminium bike running 105 group set.

I have narrowed it down to a
Scott CR1 Pro with ultegra for €3,000
Planet X RT-57 with SRAM Force for €2,000
Planet X RT-57 with SRAM Red for €2,500

Is the Scott worth €1,000 more than the Planet X Force and is the RED groupo with €500 more than force. The Red version comes with FSA SLK light crank.

Any feedback or experiences welcome.

Planet X have a distributor approx 60 miles from me so I can try it out beforehand.

You're overpaying for the Scott. Call Epic Cycles and they'll get you one under the 2k sterling barrier. In fact you can fint them for 1900 pretty much everywhere.

  • Most sites I have looked at are around 2200. I would prefer to by something with some form of local support. I had considered the likes of Canyon etc but prefer to be able to try it out beforehand.

So go into your LBS and see if they'll price-match. It's in their interest as they'll be gaining a customer and clearing stock. I'll buy things from my LBS that are a bit more expensive, but on big-ticket items at the end of the day you have to be loyal to your wallet. I didn't buy my bike from my LBS, but they're always happy to see me as I give them lots of other business.

  • So are you recommending the Scott over the Planet X?
    Any particular reasons?

Higher quality carbon from a better fab, and Scott has always done right by me in both snow and cycling. Not really a BB30 fan either. That said you're looking at different quality bikes and the price reflects that. I'm sure you'll be happy regardless of what you choose, but I subscribe to the "buy cheap, buy twice" school of thought.

Nothing wrong with the planet x bikes. I know plenty of happy users.
Try and get a ride on both and see which you prefer ?
It may come down to SRAM v Shimano. And I didn't bother with the extra for Red. My force bike is still faster uphill than my mates Red. ;-)
