Tyre Pressures

Probably a naive question but...a mountain bike's tyre pressures are 40 to 60 psi and a road bike 100 to 120. What about a mountain bike with road tyres on? Good question from a newbie.....!

What height are the road tyres?

  • I have a mountain bike fitted with 25mm tyres. The max pressure is 85psi which is what I use.

A mountain bike with 25mm tyres.

    That makes sense.

Yep, it does. Till I got my road bike I had a second set of wheels and tyres for using the MTB on tarmac training runs, when I knew I wasn't going off road. It made covering more miles a bit easier than wearing out the heavy knobblies. It says on the tyre side walls the max pressure to use, by the way.

Exactly. Now I have my road bike the MTB spends most of it's time on the turbo trainer and the tyres are fine for this as well

He wasn't asking what the max pressure is, he was asking what pressure to run his tyres at.

When I had an MTB with 26" wheels I put 1.5 inch slicks on it for road riding. I did my tyres by feel (comfort vs rolling resistance vs pinch flat protection) but I think I probably ran them about 55-60 psi.

Maybe the tyre manufacturer has some advice?

Or I think there's a chart somewhere on the CTC website involving tyre width, total weight of bike and rider and the front to back weight distribution.

Just get a proper road bike and leave the diesel ploughing the fields :-)

  • I run my MTB at 25psi, I have even run it at 20psi, but then again I run tubless.

When the gfriend did some road riding on her MTB I got her some slicks and just pumped them up until they were pretty solid, I think it was about 65-70PSI. She is only samll though so depends on weight too. If youre a heavy rider put more in.

FWIW I ride my road bike at 100PSI and I weigh 65kg and never had any problems, feels fine for me.

if you're now only using the mtb + slicks on your turbo trainer then I'd have thought the pressure isn't that critical anyway. My mtb slicks advise up to 65 psi so i usually run them at about 55 - 60.

Jeez - if I did that I'd be on the rims. (Note to self, must lose weight)
