I have a large noggin. It's handsome, but large. :|

When I bought my bike, I also bought a 30 quid Bell helmet but, according to Mrs Banjo, "It looks like a watermelon balanced on a pumpkin".

Now I know the main thing is not the leave my brain smeared on a treetrunk, but it would be nice not to look like a pillock as well. Any advice?

(budget around the 50-odd quid mark I guess).

    one that fits.

    yes that simple.

the Bell one that I have if fine for MY head and it aint a small one.

get your head into as many as you can and see what is right.

maybe your Bell (you do not say the model) just needs some adjustment.

The Boardman helmets (Halfords only) are nicely made, fit (me anyway) well and the large is flaming HUGE....also you can get new pads on special order for just £5.99. They also have the jkudos of having a genuine CF insert to spread impact loads.

I've been using a Boardman road now for 2 years, have just replaced the pads, still very happy with it.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.
  • Cheers, I shall investigate the Boardman lids next time I pass a Halfords

the one I have does fit (the adjustable strap isn't at its max anyway, and it feels secure) - it's more a case of there being so much polystyrene on top that it looks like it's perched on top.

    Please move to crudcatcher.
  • I use a Specialized Tactic which is pretty good for larger heads. Always check fit though!

  • Giros work well - I have a melonhead and their large sizes always fit without looking too stupid.
(At least the missus doesn't laugh at me anymore, so I take that as a positive)

  • buddy I have a large head. Upper limits of XL according to all manner of headwear but my Fox Flux helmet fits really nice, it can even go bigger.

There were some good deals a while back cos they were low on stock.
