I have the 2013s for a year now now and I'm really surprised with all the loving going on for these wheels on this thread, I am thinking of upgrading these wheels to the dura ace c24s but having read some of the comments on this thread in saying that there's not a lot of difference I'm now seriously wondering wether to bother.
For the record before I got the ksyriums I had stock giant wheels before upgrading to giant pslr1 which was a good improvement, I then got the ksyriums with my new bike and to be honest the haven't impressed me, yes they are bullet proof as the saying goes and I rode them all through the winter hitting plenty of potholes and they are as good as new, they feel ok climbing nothing special, but my gripe with them is that they are hard work to keep up my average speed of around 19mph.
To say they feel like riding through mud would be an exaggeration I'm not expecting aero performance I'm after a good climbing wheel that will hold speed better on the flat so I'm hoping and asking if these dura ace will spin a hell of a lot better for £600.

Got to agree with this. I tried them with the 25mm mavics, 23mm gp4000's and 23mm pro4's. Very mediocre IMO

My choice came down to Elite S, Fulcrum Zero and Dura Ace C24s

I have the C24's very buttery smooth ride and lightweight and a lot stronger than they look, i'm 85Kg and they have held up ( Elites / Fulcrums look stronger) I went for the C24s because of their light weight and supposdly better aero properties. Very good acceleration but to be honest my stock Bontrager race wheels roll faster when up to speed

seeing the elite s for anything between £349 and £469, really fancy them. Why would the prices be so different on some sites?

    cheers

I finally went for the dura ace and they are better than the ksyriums not massively but a notable improvement, I'm running these on 25mm conti 400s tyres at 80f/90r psi, my climbing and speed have improved and they are not as harsh as the ksyriums.
So was the upgrade money well spent? Yes and no!
If you are fortunate enough to have a spare £600 at hand then yes go for it you will appreciate the improvements, if £600 is stretching your budget then stick with the ksyriums as you may end up regretting shelling out for marginal improvements, but if you are split between buying either of these wheels then definitely go for the dura ace the £150 aprox extra is definitely worth it.

£338 for the Mavic Ksyrium Elite S Wheelset seems an excellent price, thinking of buying.

Thanks, very good price although its a pity they don't have an english version of the their website. How did you overcome the postcode field in the address details as it only accepts 5 characters rather than the 7 needed?

If you're paying by PayPal they'll have have your address stored, so should overcome the postcode problem.

I mailed them afterwards, as I paid by card, and explained I could not enter the address as it should be for the UK - chap replied the same day (I had been mailing him with questions anyway) and changed it for me.

Piece of cake - arrived in no time, and could track them all the way!

I'd be pissed if I ordered a pair of wheels and they just sent me a piece of cake - no matter how quickly it arrived.

  • ****UPDATE FROM ORIGINAL POSTER*** TWO YEARS ON......

So two weeks before the wheels' 2nd birthday, they've covered about 5500 miles carrying my 15+ stone; including alot of Dartmoor, alot of rain, several gravelly cycle tracks and one that turned into a rutted stoney forest track! Still true, original bearings and never thought about maintenance of any kind.

    Then..

Ping, and that was it. One of the spokes had pulled out a chunk of the rear hub. 20mph, slight incline, smooth tarmac.. ping.
10 days later, a brand new wheel supplied by Mavic. Material failure, really sorry, have a brand new wheel (and tyre) thanks for your patience.

It doesn't get alot better than that really.

Was that through the Mavic mp3 insurance or just the normal two year guarantee?
  • The normal warranty Elfed.
I bought the MP3 insurance which is more for accidental damage. Perhaps £40 wasted with hindsight, but it did stop me worrying all weekend before I could get back to the shop, as I thought that was what would cover me.
Turns out the factory warranty is two years as well. I'd buy the insurance again because it's a forgettable amount, and you never what lurks under that puddle!
    No regrets.

It does... it would have been better if it didn't break in the first place. You stroke lucky, as it could have happened the other side of the warranty deadline or it could have happened two days before that important cycling trip to the alps or it could have happened when you were going at 50 mph instead... there is nothing remarkable in a hub that cracks and 5500 miles is not a long way by any standard... there are people on here who double that every year.
BTW: that issue with the hub is a well known long standing Aksium/Ksyrium problem which I thought had beeen addressed by Mavic a few years ago with the new and improved flange design

A climbing wheel needs to be stiff. It needs to transfer high pedal loads with little or no flex. It also needs to be light but stiffness is the main criteria.

Being aero for maintaining high speeds is further down the priority list.

The Mavics are by far the stiffest of those three wheels.

That's an Aksium and I got it from the web... I have seen a few for real though... but as I said, I thought the problem had been fixed by now as we are talking 2010 or so
