Hi,

Ive already got a Garmin Edge 500 and have to say its fanastic, i was stick of strava of my phone giving incorrect data (speed, cals, elevations, missing route sections). The garmin thou is bang on 5 star kit. However, i fancy getting the heart rate monitor as i want to progress my riding. I saw this on ebay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Garmin-Heart-Rate-Monitor-HRM-for-Forunner-50-F60-305-405-410-610-Edge-305-310XT-/280957230334?pt=UK_Sporting_Goods_Activity_Monitoring_MJ&hash=item416a5b1cfe&_uhb=1#ht_3802wt_1398

Will this work with my edge 500?

Or do i want this? I notice the different straps?

Either will work with your 500
  • I got an 800 a couple of years ago, and it's the absolute mutts nuts. However, I found that the heart rate was double-reading (for example giving readings of 225bpm when I was pootling along!).

A friend had a similar problem, sent his HRM strap back and got a replacement strap which fixed it. I had the same problem and solved it by stealing my wife's HRM strap which she'd got with her ForeRunner.

Looking at the pictures in your ebay links, the first link is to the one which works fine - I can tell by the strap attachment mechanism. I can't now find the one which didn't work, but I remember that the straps were attached by poppers to the back of the sensor, and from memory this is similar to the second link you found.

Therefore from our experience I'd recommend the first strap - with the T-shaped buckles.

  • The first one came with my 500, but failed and was replaced by the second.

I found the first easier to fit, but the second lighter.
All the gear, but no idea...

Oh boy - that's going to be confusing for the OP - the opposite to my experience!

However - do you mean failed completely? For me and my mate, the bad one 'worked' but gave double readings.

I've found (for whatever reason, possibly static I create no idea) that the premium soft HRM straps come up with ridiculous readings at certain points (250bpm etc) I've had three of those since I've upgraded different garmins over the years, but the HRM I find works perfectly everytime is the big fat plastic strapped one I got years ago all the way back with my forerunner 305. Chunky but can beat it IMO.
