Hi All,

I've not ridden a bike since I was 18 (33 now). I'm really out of shape and overweight (not badly, but enough), and I had a bit of a heart scare a few months ago. So I've taken up cycling, I bought a cheap bike from cycle king, and the family set off on a bike ride was mainly in a park but they also had a little 2 mile forest trail.

So after about a mile I knew this is what I wanted to be doing and my life now had meaning. Unfortunately the bike literally fell apart, and when I reached the end both gear shifters had fallen off and the deralier? was bent, the back brakes didn't work as the blocks had fallen off, and the chain kept falling off every 25 feet. So I took it back and after much shouting and complaining a refund was issued.

A few weeks later, and my young cousin at university is in need of cash, and he offers me a Specialized Hardrock Sport 2011 Disc for £75, So I bought it. However it needs work, It needs new tyres, and new seat, the right shifter has come off but looks repairable, few scrapes and marks on the frame, disc brakes don't seem to work to well so may need adjusting, but overall not too bad. I took it to the local bike shop who checked it over and gave it a service for £35 and confirmed the frame is sound and nothing a good clean and a few repairs won't fix, and quoted £200 to repair and upgrade and make it awesome. I've decided to make the repairs myself, overall I think I got a bargain. I found several dedicated trails close to me so as soon as the bike is properly up and running I'll be out there. So if anyone else is in the Bedfordshire area let me know.

Also I apologise for any stoopid questions I have whilst trying to repair the bike.

  • Hey Saffarus,

Great to hear you have picked up the bug! Your specialised will be great with a little bit of TLC - far better than the cheap things they pass off as bikes (years ago I brought an Apollo hybrid from Halfords that literally disolved).

I am sure bringing it back from the brink will be a labour of love, and you will find plenty of willing and able advice on these forums :)

That Sport Disc is about the only Hardrock worth getting, so well done.

I suggest you address each issue in turn and post in the workshop section for any advice you need.

Look to classifieds/ebay to source decent used parts and you'll fix it up for a maximum of about £50 from what you say.
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

You got a bargain there by the sounds of it. I bought a Spesh Hardrock disk off ebay for my wife and paid £200 (but it was mint) The Hardrock will be a much more capable bike than the original one you had, happy riding :D
