Hi,

I'm an XC guy, and i've never needed any more protection than a Road helmet (my current is a Giro Aeon). I'm moving out to British Columbia in a few months and i'm planning to take part in the more All Mountain / Freeride type riding over there.

I'm looking for a trail helmet with a bit more side / back of head protection than my Giro, and also a peak. My main contender so far is the POC Trabec Race. Has anyone got any more ideas as to what a great All Mountain style lid would be?

  • I ride my local trails in BC in an XC lid with brim and a decent bit of lower skull protection.

Where abouts in BC you moving to?

I'm going to University in Kelowna. I dont really see the point in getting an XC lid when i've got a road lid which is very similar in protection levels to XC helmets. Thats why I want an AM brain bucket.
  • I have a POC Trabec race and can highly recommend it for comfort and fit. I ride more XC / trail centres and its perfect for my needs. It's light, cool and comfy ! Everything you could want in a helmet.
  • As always - try before you buy.
POCs sizing seem slightly smaller than other companies.
I have a 'melonhead' and their largest size was too tight.

    Giro Feature
  • There are the usual suspects of Fox Flux or 661 Recon. I just got a flux and very comfy but depends on your noggin shape/size! or the Urge helmets seem like they would offer the same sort of protection.Cheaper as well
  • What about the Giro Xen, or the MET Kaos UL? Would those be considered AM helmets? It seems the general consensus is try before you buy, but I wasn't about to drop $250 on a helmet without trying it on :)

Nice - I am just up the valley in Vernon. Haven't yet done much riding in Kelowna (well any actually) but want to get down to Smiths Creek and Myra Park before winter - supposed to be great trails there. Those areas are reputed to be xc/trail riding with some tracks in myra falling into the fr/dh categories with shuttle access alongside the park. There are a few other areas in Kelowna that offer pure fr/dh tracks with big drops and ladders and so on and shuttling access. For the pure DH stuff you are probably going to want a full face lid in any case.

Up the valley in Vernon the majority of the available riding is trail riding too so I run an xc lid - then if I am riding the bike park its a full face.

Good luck at Uni and enjoy the trails down there!
