Hi
Any advice, what are the chances of getting hit with a big tax bill? Which is safer for getting the bike in one piece - USPS or Fedex? Any other recommendations? I believe duty is 4% on a frame, as opposed to more for a complete bike. Any recommended companies for covering the insurance?
Thanks West Green

Depends on what you put on the customs declaration? If you put bicycle, value $10 it's likely to attract the attention of customs officials and they can charge double-duty as a penalty based on UK value of the goods - HMRC know how to use the internet too! Similarly, put a low value on the shipping note and if it gets lost or damaged, that's all they'll compensate you for. Search US forums for advise on best shipping company.

I bought an old car badge from the US once. £40 became £70 once taxes and various handling charges were added. I think the general line from old was take the price in dollars and that in pounds is what it will probably cost you. If it still looks a bargain, go for it.

  • I imported a Mongoose titanium MTB frame for the US and had minimal customs on it but that was a few a years ago.

  • Does it make any difference that the bike is used? I suppose that it's half the value it cost when it was new so that will help?

    used or new.

bikes have 15% import tax and VAT and a handling charge.
frames and parts about 4.7% import tax and VAT and a handling charge.
