Long time lurker, first time poster...be gentle please!

Looking at getting a cycling hoodie sometime soon as the chill starts to set in a bit. Would prefer it to be merino but am open to any other suggestions, and would like something with a practical bike cut but you could obviously get away with down the pub. Ive got enough unflattering gear all ready.

Only ones ive properly come across so far are the Cobra Chrome: http://www.alwaysriding.co.uk/chrome-co ... -1163.html

and the Howies Yurt: http://www.howies.co.uk/yurt-hoody-deep-ocean.html

anyone know of any others worth considering, and had any experience of any? not being able to see the items in the flesh is quite annoying.

Ive worked for timberland for the last year and found out that timberland owned Howies pretty much up until i joined....Felt sick as a parrot when a colleague said they used to be able to get Howies gear at trade prices....gah.

Cheers in advance.

Have wanted to order the Chrome cobra for ages now but the price is a little eye watering.

It isn't merino but I practically live in my Surface hoodie, it doesn't seem to hold odor [have to verify with my mates], is cut for cycling , repels water and its much cheaper than any other offering from the likes of swrve or chrome. Might have to order the brown one now..

    Oh and welcome!
  • do you put your helmet on over the top?
  • do you put your helmet on over the top?

A helmet and a hood? Sounds like a case for embarassing bodies.
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?
  • My hood always goes over the helmet...oh sorry...back to bike stuff

to be honest theres no practical reason for me wanting the hood other than it creates a slightly more casual look. might come in useful when it gets properly cold though.

I've heard good things about the surface, especially at that price it has to be said. I was thinking of a merino jobbie as an investment though because it would seem they're much more useful more of the time, like a swiss army hoodie.

I am a bit of a "hot runner" ( probably due to me having to cane it to and from work to catch trains) and am always wary of stuff that i'll just get too hot wearing. Although to complicate things further, i'm commuting by train and bike between swindon and bristol at the moment so there is the inevitable possibility of having to wait on a cold blowy platform and suddenly finding myself freezing waiting for a delayed train.

If the Howies or Cobra were around 100 -110 I wouldn't hesitate to go for one, but an extra 50 quid is quite a kick in the knackers. might be worth going for the surface at that sale price and see how I get on with it. Let someone else buy a merino one for me 8) .

like I said, wear mine for weeks on end and it doesn't hold odor. Deffo going to get another one, looking at their website there should be a new grey one out soon. Also have the Aquaphobic Wool Jacket for colder days.

Spend all that money saved on some merino t-shirts and base layers to go under it.

iPete - what is the sizing like on dem surface hoodies?

I notice the reviewr is 65KG (I am a tad under 70) and wears a medium, so I expect that would be the right size, but just wanted some first hand input.

FYI Triton cycles seem to have them for £5 less.

I have one of the Swrve bamboo hoodies. It's pretty lightweight (feels like a cotton t-shirt) so not one for keeping you warm when it's cold. I wouldn't say that it wicks very well when you are wearing it, but it dries pretty quickly and definitely doesn't smell much. I use their bamboo t-shirts as baselayers sometimes.

I also have a Surface hoody, but I probably use it more off the bike than on it. It's too heavy to wear outside of winter, and in winter I tend to go for something a bit brighter when I'm commuting. It is quite water resistant, which is useful.

Yeah, have one too and it tends to get worn when nipping to the shops when it's drizzling, but never actually on the bike.

    JD.
  • It's not Merino but my surface hoodie is awesome and a lot cheaper that what you're looking at. It's windproof, shower proof and light enough to wear if it's a bit sunny. http://www.evanscycles.com/products/sur ... e-ec022562
