Long awaited Dura Ace 9000 C24 wheels - first look and feel
by qeaou » Tue Sep 18, 2012 5:30 pm

The long awaited line of Dura Ace 9000 came out,
Here is a first "touch and feel" of the C24 Wheels:

The wheels are inconspicuous but impressive. Dura Ace lost the "red" color. All black and white now.

The carbon alloy has an interesting look up close

10 speed cassete installed on the freehub capable of 11 speed with the spacer (quite sizable)

Beautiful Dura Ace skewers

(sorry didn't figure out how to embed photos, without external URl, so photos for the comments above are on http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.ph ... t=c24+9000)

Looking forward to trying them out,
there was a bit of mystery about what the wheels look like in real life,
so here you go.

Overall, the feel incredibly sturdy (before road-testing) and are yet incredibly light (1364g i think)

How can you have an opinion if you haven't even ridden them...

"sturdy yet light", you don't know yet, do you? Go out, ride them for 500 miles and report back.

    Sorry, my bad...
Some guys were telling me they could not just open the link without registering - which sucks...
so the link is not much help,
    here is an attachment

    This is a fair comment!
(I guess I was just excited about the product so wanted to start a discussion)

Plan to to 5000 miles and obviously will have more to say, but these are brand new...

    Anyway,
First road test - some good thoughts so far.
(Nothing epic, chum creek (cat 3) climb but gentle+Melba descent to test - outside of Melbourne, VIC,
plus to and from Melbourne site, 90km) - to get a sense of bad roads, good roads, flats, climbs, descents etc.

Sturdy feel, good handling, no scary crack or creak noises even on accidental pot holes.
Handle bad country roads well, those where you get a free ass massage.
Good on the climbs, seem to have good power transfer, relatively low weight of rear wheel (for the price category) helps, especially if you are not a mountain goat... (like in my case) (as compared to full carbon, low spoke count, and a few other Mavics)
solid feel on descents with cornering, might have had better areo from a deeper dish,
but a handles side wind well instead (this was a pain with 50mm carbons)

This is just the first test, so we'll see how they last,
(the brand new wheels come with fancy bags, but no spare spokes, that is either a bad thing, or a good thing, who knows) - i've had new sets come with 5 spare spokes, this made we wonder... and of course they started braking and eventually the hub broke - will not mention the brand, I am not about bad-mouthing anything or anyone)

To compare DA 7900 to 9000:
Unfortunately never had the pleasure to ride the 7900 series, shame.
Got the 9000 after a series of recommendations of DA C24 as the best allrounders in this price category,
I wish there was someone adding to this thread who actually tested both.
I do have a distinct impression that rolling resistance is much lower than previous few sets of wheels.
(but the reasons could be so many - bearings, hub design, etc etc)
After additional 50km test riding on a route I did 20+ times, I was able to beat most sections,
same conditions, same form, same weather etc and not really pushing it too hard... so I guess this is a promising.

The wheels that came with my Viking feel incredibly sturdy when I'm not riding them...

    Road - Dolan Preffisio
    MTB - On-One Inbred

I have no idea what's going on here.

I know I know, I already got a hard time for the comment, saying they are sturdy before test rides,
but after 3 rides, one race, they do hold up nicely.

I am however, getting an impression that the tyre pressure does not hold (on regular GP4000s),
I am examining if I need other tyres or if it is a tube issue (from my 700c/18 tubes)
Any feedback welcome, don't kill me for not knowing.

Surely it has nothing to do with the wheels...
You are not using latex tubes, are you... ?

Nope. but that wouldbe a good call.
Kuota tubes which are 18-23mm capable.
It must be just my impression - previously I had tyres that I can not press a finger against at all, just rock solid.
Overall, no big deal I think...

Any updates on these wheels.how do they feel when riding.
I am thinking of using the front dura ace 9000 but km a little concerned about using a wheel with only 16 spokes.

The rear with 20 is more likely to give you grief than the front with 16... Front wheels have a much easier life on the road
