Hi, I am going to University and need a very strong but well priced bike lock!
Any suggestions would be great, the lock needs to be very secure but obviously not too expensive!
Thanks
Elliot

What is your budget? Can you leave the lock on site?0

buy a cheaper bike."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

This.
£50 rat bike and £20 lock, nobody will touch it and you're not wearing out parts on the good bike.
You'd be looking at spending that much as a minimum to lock up a decent bike in town, and if the scumbag is motivated, they'll have it anyway.0 -
Absolutley agree, a nice bike will definatley get stolen from a university campus or in a town centre eventually.
If you have a decent bike then I dont think they can be left unattended anymore. Either walk or get a very old banger as already suggested.0 -
Would quite like to take it as I am right next to the lake district! Going to get insurance in case.
Is this lock any good, http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Kryptonite-New- ... _15256.htm Great price0 -
Yes, is the lock I use, very tough. But see what the insurance people recommend.0

Thanks will give them a ring tomorrow. Is tredz a good bike shop, trustable?0

Make sure you change your QR bits for something less stealable as well. Even allen keyed skewers are easy pickings unless you fill the ends with super glue to block the key.... this can be picked out at your leisure. I'd be tempted to take 2 bikes. keep the good-un in your room and the rat bike for everything else. First week at uni is probably the most dangerous... my lad had his saddle pinched, plus his bike was damaged whilst locked up inside halls (though not in his room).Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

Thanks for the replies. The university has cycle stores with a magnetic grill gate that’s opened with a fob so it is reasonably secure anyway I think. Will buy the lock now, better to be safe than sorry I suppose!0

What type of bike is it? Our local train station has 'secure' bike stores. Thieves just ripped the side of the store and took the bike. So make sure it's locked within the store if that's possible. Or is it a proper locked room?
Anyhoo... After my sons experience I wouldn't leave any nice bike outside a uni building or accommodation.Cool, retro and sometimes downright rude MTB and cycling themed T shirts. Just MTFU.

There is no lock to prevent the bike from getting stolen. Some better locks may push away average looser thug but will not resist "focused specialist" with angle grinder. If you bike is desirable enough it will be gone0

It is in a small building which you need some sort of key card to get into. But I have bought one of these http://www.tredz.co.uk/.Kryptonite-New- ... _15257.htm
So hopefully it will be strong enough. I also have another strong lock. I will take the seat off and maybe the front wheel aswell or attach it with another strong lock. Don't think anyone will have an angle grinder at university, plus it has cctv which I suppose will deter people. Although the insurance from cycleguard says it needs to be inside, not sure if that includes this?0
