    That is a numpty solution and anyone who suggests this solution is a numpty.

    Why would you be pedalling backwards? To set the position of the pedals prior to:

    1. Shifting within a limited distance;
    2. Jumping;
    3. Pedal kicking.

    When the chain drops down it forms a chainsuck condition in reverse that could easily break the hanger if you're not careful.

    When the reminder about OLD (130mm vs 135mm) was given it was intended as a hint towards chainstay shape (ie for tyre clearances between a road frame vs OP's mtb frame) and this affects what chainset can be fitted and made to work.

    Well, you'll need to follow atleast some of it if you're building up the Shimano Alfine IGH bike.

    It'll make sense when you fit the chain onto the single sprocket and the chainring, then give it a spin.

    Carrera TDF road bikes are £300 new, so £270 with the 10% discounts floating around, so you could buy a used one for £200 surely?

    It'll be a lot easier just to buy one of those, or similar.
