Manchester to Liverpool - best route

Hi,
I want to cycle from Manchester (Chorlton) to Liverpool this weekend. I'm on a road bike and don't mind cycling on roads with a bit of traffic, so long as there's a dedicated cycle lane and it's relatively safe. Obviously no motorways or massively busy roads!
Any suggestions on the best route? No off-road/canal routes, please.
Thanks.

When I cycle from Sale to Aintree the route I tend to use is Carrington, Warbuton Bridge, A57 to Warrington, A57 to Prescot and then, for you, continue along the A57 into town. There are variations I sometimes take but this is the most direct route I think.0 -
Are you looking for a direct or a scenic route - ie avoiding the main roads?
have a look at the manc - blackpool ride

you could go as far as the east lancs and then head in or you could follow spincitys advice and get to warrington - but then i'd take the a570 to windle island and take the east lancs - walton hall avenue.
if you fancy a quieter route you could cross the junstion at windle island and do the rainford bypass -> bickerstaffe -> kirkby -> valley rd -> long lane -> east lancs
the bickerstaffe kirkby route was used by the ToB by the way - live the dreamThe dissenter is every human being at those moments of his life when he resigns

Thanks very much for the tips. Scenic is good but not at the cost of (too much) time as I need to be somewhere at a certain time. Much prefer a country lane to a busy road, though.
Some good tips guys. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'll check out those routes now.0
