Suddenly noisy rear mavic ksyrium
covert ops

hi all,
After 13 months of trouble free riding, a metallic knocking noise has suddenly appeared from my rear mavic ksyrium and i've noticed that the axel has a lot of play in it. Cones are tight but is seems as if my axel has been swapped for one that is 1mm slimmer. My local LBS suggested that i gunk it in crease to see if that helps before i take it in to them.
The wheel itself spins freely on the axel and i cannot feel/hear any other noises.
Any hints would be welcome!
Thanks

If the axle is tight and runs smooth it could well be the hub body causing the noise. You could try and take it apart and clean round the little springs.

thanks for the video link. i was a little nervous about doing it myself, but it looks pretty straight forward. I'd better warn the wife and kids about the potential swearing before it start.0

If the caps (and not cones) are tight and you have play, probably the bearings need to be replaced. Any Mavic retailer should be able to do this for you, it's an LBS job, not a DIY one.left the forum March 20230

It could well be the bearings, but to be honest i've never heard them make any noise when they needed replaced. You'd certainly get a bit of play alright, the noise i've generally found is the the actual hub body giving up the ghost. The internal bearings will be shot and cleaning the paws on the hub will not fix that problem.

For what it's worth you can buy yhe bearings in any bearing dealership and remove and fit them yourself if you're confident to do so. A LBS will charge you £20 of so for the job but at least you have some comback.
Have a look at the Mavic manual and ask yourself if you can do it.

I found this thread useful in helping me with a problem on my Mavic Aksiums road wheels I was getting a squealing while free wheeling down hill in the USA it's known as the sqeal of death and is cause by wear on the white bushing in the freehub. I have already replaced the bearings and it still does it. I found a guy on Ebay.com who does a replacement bushing for $23 (£14) free International shipping and I have just contacted him to see if his bushing will fit ny Aksiums.
I could just buy a new freehub but at £34 after I have already bought new bearings, new pauls and springs!
Thanks for the info in this thread from the above post.
I've just found the same bushing on Ebay.co.uk by searching Mavic freehub.0
