just wondered after using the free strava iphone app everyday for a few weeks and a 3.5 hours in the saddle on saturday where it drained my battery to 3%, if my phone company charge me for running the GPS and the upload/download?
if so wondering if its better/cheaper to buy a garmin edge?

No one can charge for GPS usage. Mobile data on the other hand...0 -
Presumably you have some Internet allowance with your phone ? It only uses a small amount of this when you save.
And something's up with your phone. I get 6 hour rides in on mine without it running out.
Do you have all of your apps running at once ?0 -

As others have said, it uses the cellular data network and GPS signals to give real time locations. The phone is basically recieving data to enble these location services. Your phone company will charge you for data, or you will have a monthly allowance or unlimited data depending on your contract.

Oh, and for battery life, ensure only strava is running, turn off Push function for apps like Mail, turn off Bluetooth & wifi (unless your in a wifi area), and you should see an improvement.0 -
thanks for the responses. i think im going to buy a garmin thingy as im sure my phone company rape me on the charges especially as i use strava everyday and the garmin thing offers more functions and i can read it while riding which is very tricky getting a phone out of your pocket on the move.
cheers...0
