As per the title really. I'm after a short sleeve base layer that will take the edge off. Doesn't have to be super thermal at this stage.

Thanks!

Rapha baslelayers - but only in the sales. Not much use for you just now though.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.

have a look and see if planetx are still doing the shortsleeve merino ones for cheapness - or go to aldi get cheap ones and cut the arms off

Endurance baabaa, or have a look at the Craft range on the alwaysriding website.

  • I don't have one but I want one.

I might get one for my birthday (I have asked).
  • Thanks all!

Planet X only have silly sizes left, unfortunately.
Rapha's a nice idea, but a little too pricey.
I've heard good things about the Endura ba ba, so may try to find a decent deal.
I like the look of the Torm, but I have one of their jerseys, and though I love it, it does get soaked in sweat quicker than my man made fabric jerseys. It's still comfortable even then, but definitely doesn't wick as well.
  • Could always get a generic one? I've got several from Nike, Canterbury and Under Armour and all are as good as the cycling-specific ones I have.

  • Planet X merino base layers - not quite as well made as Rapha's, but excellent vfm. When they have them in stock, that is! I took the plunge with merino/sportswool a couple of years ago...and never looked back. I have some Prendas synthetic ones (I'm a big Prendas fan)....but they jst feel itchy in comparison to merino. Like others have said - the Rapha ones are nice, but so's the price. At full price, all the Rapha range is overpriced - however, they normally have a decent Boxing Day sale, so could be worth hanging on for? Also check out Torm and Shutt.

+1 - very decent and warm, I wore mine today for the first time since winter, lovely!
  • Wore the dhb merino one last fall, nice and warm didnt take long to dry either. Then it got put in a 40 degree wash and shrunk. :( may buy another this year as they are decent quality.

  • I use Craft baselayers, particularly the long sleeved version with the Windstopper front panel during the winter. Short sleeved in the summer. I find them excellent.

Base layers designed and made by a Scandinavian company does it for me.

Craft zero extreme or the prendas one
  • I've gone for an Endura Baa Baa through cyclestore.co.uk as they are about a tenner cheaper there than anywhere else I can find and the base layer itself gets good reviews. Pretty soon I'll need something to ward off the colder weather so will check out some of the other suggestions above.

    Cheers!

I've loads of thermal base layers. Lots of makes. I can't tell them apart.
I'd not pay big money for them now. The aldi layers are great value.

I defy anyone to tell the difference in a blind test.

I've got 2 cold weather and one hot weather BL from Canterbury.

More than happy with them and all of them were £20-25 each.

Aldi stuff is ok but only for short distance rides or commutes - got a couple of these
  • The best I've ever had have been from Finisterre - http://www.finisterreuk.com/shop/mens/c ... layer.html

Not particularly cheap, but they are brilliant.

+2 great stuff for the money... Wash at 30 degrees and they last years

  • Not cycling specific, but I like Icebreaker merino stuff.
  • Craft with gore windstopper, used it twice this week, awesome. Have an unused normal Craft one for less windy days, hope to try it this weekend. All my old skiing ones no longer fit, did love my icebreaker merino for that.

Under Armour are excellent, and they are really well made, every UA item I have has exceeded expectations, baselayers can be had from around £20. I also like Canterbury, Nike and Adidas, but UA edge it for me.

That said Aldi gear is very well priced.
  • A quick follow up...

Having used the Baa Baa on the commute yesterday I can say that it is bloody awful! It was soaked through with sweat in no time that it held against my skin to be nicely chilled by the wind. It stank like a cross between an old ladies' hairdresser's, a hay barn and a wet labrador, and it took several hours to dry out once hung. Oh, and yes, I did wash it first.

I'd be sending it back if my lovely wife hadn't taken it upon herself to chuck all the packaging. Maybe I'm doing something wrong.
  • I use Prostar base layers, both top and shorts.
I find the top really good and don't feel the sweat in it.
I use the shorts on colder days with padded shorts in order to keep warmer down there!
