The Department for Transport have produced new guidance on shared used paths, which might interest folks here.

I particularly like that under "Cyclist categories" on page 11, they've included "fast commuter". Remember, kids, it's not a race.

A lot of sensible stuff in there. I wonder if anyone with responsibility for designing / building shared use paths will actually read it though.0

Did it exist in it's current format before it was designated as a cycle route? Or was that built, out of nothing, for cyclists?
Looks like a old railwayline,
I cut though Bushy Park which varies from wide enough for two cars to pass to barely wider than my bars.0 -
The impression I got was that shared use paths were very much a last resort and would be created only if there was a serious problem and cyclist couldn't be accommodated on the road. Don't get me wrong, most of the time I'd much prefer to be on the road but there are loads of virtually unused footways adjacent to busy roads that could easily be made shared use for negligible cost. So doing might encourage the less 'furious cyclists' to make use of them.Nobody told me we had a communication problem0

tis true a disused railway line that was up until 10yrs ago a cinder path
but now its a shared lineKeeping it classy since '830 -
The "greenway" in Lancaster that I use twice daily is pretty good. It's reasonably wide, and has a solid white line to clearly mark the "for pedestrians" and "for cycles" lanes. The only downside is that a lot of cyclists, and a lot of walkers, don't stick to the correct side.
The last 20 seconds of this video show it quite well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Np3sbXKjA740 -

Nah, this: http://www.outdooraccess-scotland.com/o ... s/cycling/ is a much better idea, lets see it spread south of the border.I used to just ride my bike to work but now I find myself going out looking for bigger and bigger hills.0
