Hello all, how is it going?

Well, where to start... Jeezy!

Right, I've just bought a kona shred ( a few years old, a bit rough round the edges but altogether a sound solid bike but I have a few problems/queries/questions about this whole mountain biking lark...

As it stands, the bike is single speed but I somehow snapped the chain moving the bike whilst it was in the van. I've had a bmx before and as I remember I wasn't keen at al on being restricted to one gear!

The bike has brand new cranks(shimano deore?) and just a single wee cog at the rear hub. Single disc brake (promax cable one at the rear). I'm a great believer in doing as much as you can with what you have *boom boom* hence why I bought this bike before it was away to be skipped.

For fear of rabbiting on a bit, I'll cut to the chase; how much would it be/what the heck do I need to change the bike to a 9/10 speed beast?? Would I be best just putting it into a local shop and throwing money at them or seen as I'm semi-competent and willing to try should I try and have a bash myself?

I'm not looking for the best of the best stuff, just decent, reliable, middle-of-the-road stuff to get me back on a bike before sets in and removes the chance!!

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated and even more greatly received,
Thanks guys,
Findlay

so assuming the rear wheel is a multi speed freehub with a s/s converter on it

    ebay -

    9 speed cassette
    9 speed chain
9 speed rear mech and shifter
    (maybe a chain guide )
    gear cable

check parktools for info on strip down and rebuild

10 speed is not worth it, but s/s is very easy to get used to, and those sorts of bikes are not really uphill demons

s/s is a good way to learn to ride mtb.....
  • Thanks estamida!

The rear hub just has the single cog on it with a couple of spacers to take up the rest of the space...
What kinda stuff should I be looking for, just any make of cassette with any shifter or does it have to be all the same make? Is there a certain set up I should be striving towards or can you get away with just putting anything with anything??

Also any recommendation on a front brake (is hydraulic disc the best to go for)?

    Thanks,
    Findlay

What's your budget? You could do it for under £100, or over £1000

  • Well, I was thinking between £100-200.

A guy I know who bikes' said a shop would be around 250 for the job parts and labour so if I'm doing it myself I'd think that was fair if I'm removing labour costs?! Could be wrong tho...
    What would you recommend?

    Thanks,

Wasn't planning too, any advice on the bike?!

And as for the becycle idea; I was really hoping I could get down to them but work and training makes it near on impossible so it looks like I'm out on my own on this one :(.

    Thanks,

Trawl Ebay, CRC, Wiggle etc for cheap bits. Estampida has a list of what you need, plus brakes.
