large chainring removal

2011 spesh stumpjumper fsr comp thinking of removing large chain ring as it is not usedwhen doing cross country would it be a good idea to shorten chain if so how many links can i take off or is it not necessary

Yes, round (new) big ring and big cog, missing out the mech and add a link.

You may also have to change the large chain ring retaining bolts, They may be too long without the outer ring.

True. Or stick a bash ring on so.it looks gnarly.
