Chainring technical advice please

Hi, Currently running a 38/26 double on my 29er with a 11-36 cassette with an all 2012 XT front mech/ crank etc. I may potentially need a couple more gears for something I am planning to do shortly and am thinking about changing the small chainring to an XT 24 or even a 22. Does anyone with more mechanical knowledge than me (so that's probably all of you) anticipate any issues if I do this.
Many Thanks in advance.

24 is a stretch, 22 probably too much of a jump for clean shifting.0

Thank You. Advice is appreciated.
May try the 24 and see how it goes.0 -
I run a 36/22 Double which i shift with a 3 spd SLX front mech with the high limit screw screwed right in. Its a 14 teeth jump which is 2 bigger than your current setup and the same as the 38/24 you might run. It seems to shift fine for me so should do for you too. Like Supersonic said though i'm not sure about the 38/22 as that's a pretty big drop from the outer ring.
I find the 22 is too small for me and have only used it twice in the last 4 months of riding. I am probably going to jump up to either a 24 or possibly a 26 to make it a little more useful.0
