Sidewall blowout

Whilst doing a spot of light touring last week I was unfortunate enough to experience the aforementioned. I was lucky enough to get it at a manageable speed. It was the front, no loading.

I'm an experienced bike rider but I've never encountered a sidewall puncture before. It's made me lose confidence in my Krylions, which I've been campaigning without incident, save for a couple of flint flats, for the last three years or so. I replace both tyres at the start of every winter.

I ride around 5k miles on a pair before I bin them unless they require replacement before that, based upon a a weekly visual inspection. I'm a bit OCD.

What causes sidewall failures like this?

Catching the sidewall on a sharp flint or piece of glass and can occur to any tyre. Krylions are pretty robust IME
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • I bought a set of Krylions the other week. The rear sidewall blew out after less than 8 miles.
The shop exchanged it for me so they could send back to Michelin and haven't had any issue with the replacement (touch wood!).
