Just blagged a ticket for Friday. Yippee!
  • Not going but live in Chichester and my commute takes me past the circuit every day. As a special treat for myself on the Friday of the Festival (and also the FOS) I change my route and ride past the two miles of stationary traffic on the A27 - just to feel smug :)

Hope you enjoy the event though, I love it when the FOS or Revival are on, brings a sleepy City to life. Plus we also get free airshows in our garden which is nice!

Oooh, I was thinking of sticking the hack bike in the back of the car and riding the last few miles. Would it be terribly rude of me to ask advice an where to beach the car? I think I'll approach from the A286.
Any local advice would be much appreciated.
  • I'd avoid the A286 if I were you. South of Midhurst, there aren't many places to park up until you get to Lavant (just north of Chichester), by which time you'll be stuck in traffic. The same goes for the A285 through Petworth (which will be worse, because that road leads on to the site). Riding those roads can be pretty crappy; they're horrible for fast traffic despite some good climbs and decents. The smart money would be to take the A3 and hang a right angle across the A27. It's longer, but you'll be able to park up in Chichester and cycle the rest of the way in.
  • Goodwood Revival...isn't that what Viagra's for?

Ok some choices, if you're heading down the A286 you could park up in Lavant (a few miles south west of Singleton heading towards Chichester) and ride from there. plenty of places to park off the main road - mainly residential.

A285 - turn off well before Halnaker (where the traffic gets bad) either go right into Selhurstpark road a few miles south of Duncton, there's plenty of car parks along that road but may be slightly risky as in the middle of nowhere. Great views down to the Coast though - I ride it often, go down Eastdean Hill which takes you right up to the Festival car parks and easy access of the circuit.

Alternatively get onto the A27 East of Chichester ( from A29) and head West, take the 1st exit off the roundabout at Tangmere, head into Tangmere and park up. The gridlock doesn't normally get this far East. Then ride north through Boxgrove (The Street) go straight over at the cross roads with the A285 and that takes you up to the gates of Goodwood house just half a mile from the Motor Circuit.

I only live a few miles from the circuit and I would cycle if I could but would need a bike more in keeping with my planned attire.

I could'nt justify taking Friday off work so will have to content myself with 2 days of 60's pit girls, women in seemed tights, GT cars and wartime aircraft....

Thanks for the advice. Should I ride the EPO's station hack?

Hmm, image not working. It's a 50's ladies town bike, badly brush painted.

I think that's just the job, right era and it's a BSA (well at least the cranks are)!

You might want to cram a bit more beer in the basket given the prices inside the Festival

And some food - 2 lots of Hotdog and chips with a drink was £18.00 last year.
  • I'm going, 330 mile trip but worth it-been to every one.

    It was clear this morning!

Small Car park at top of the hill just south of Cocking ... options are then
    1) cycle down into Lavant (~5miles) then past the village green and then head east just to the north of the circuit ..
    2) cycle down to Singleton (~2-3 miles - same road) and then either turn left towards East Dean - then turn right up the hill (max 12%) to take you past the Goodwood horse racing circuit - or just after the village turn left UP knights hill - this has a short 17% section ...

No - the smart money would be to avoid the major roads at all cost ... for the FoS the A27 was jammed all the way back past the A3(M) ...

Ah, but what way were you heading and at what time? Once you get to Lavant, you're going to have to try to cut across to get to New Road, where the road is either going to be shut or chock full of traffic trying to get onto the site and people who want to get a watch of things without paying for a ticket.

Bugger, didn't think of that one. Still, didn't want to direct anyone up Knights Hill if they're on a pub hack.

True, but this ain't the Festival of Speed. Plus don't forget that in the summer the A27 can get fairly jammed up around Chi with all the traffic filtering off to West Wittering and the Beach, which exacerbates things. Since things are a bit quieter now, it should be a safer option. Personally, I wouldn't drive down on the A285/6 because driving on those roads can be frustrating at the best of times even without the event traffic, but hey, it's your choice.

Thanks for the tips. The signs from the A3 were directing traffic down the A283, so I took the A286. I wound up ditching the car in Lavant just before a pub car park and had a very short ride along New Road, which was indeed closed to traffic. Good job it wasn't far, I was visited by she that must not be named and had a completely flat tyre so had to push it back to the car.
Had a great day and avoided all the queues.
  • Well it's nice to meet (in forum terms) a few locals. are you members of any clubs? I met a nice chap from Southdown Velo coming back from a ride a while back but haven't had an opportunity to go out with them on the Saturday rides. He said the Sunday was a bit hardcore!

All's well that ends well, then (flats notwithstanding) :D

I'm a fairly new convert to the road (spent most of my biking time knocking around Kingley Vale on MTB), but a workmate is a member of Southdowns Velo so I've met a couple of members through him. The ones I've met are a nice bunch and are well organized (their club kit is fairly ubiquitous around Chichester area). Their Saturday ride is meant to be pretty casual (a nice loop round Rowlands Castle at a comfy pace), but the Sunday route heads up to East Meon and tends to be faster.

I saw a few people on road bikes riding along the A286. I must say that would scare me more than cycling in London does. It all depends on what you're used to I guess.
Lovely down there mind you.I misbehaved in chichester a bit in my younger days. A mate worked at the Festival Theatre 20 plus years ago and I'd go down for some of the parties. That was a lifetime ago.
  • Glad you had a good day, weather turned out ok to.

I've ridden the A286 a few times and it's not a great road, however the A285 has the worst rep, IIRC it's one of the worst roads in England regarding traffic fatalities but think the bad bits are further up nearer to Petworth and North of there. Luckily there's a few other options which bypass stretches of it and far more scenic too.
It is nice here, road riding is great with a few hills and lots of nice quiet(ish) lanes but also the offroad is great too with the SDW and the SD National park on our back door. Maybe not as dramatic as some parts of the UK but an area with lots of variety.

What a great weekend - got to sit in the Royal Navy Historic Flights Swordfish, spent a fortune on food and drink (£5.70 for a sausage in a roll and £3.20 for chips) and saw some amazing racing.

Some of the cars up for sale were a tad over priced (IMHO), £32,000 for a 60's Mini Countryman.????

The only stretch of the A285 I usually go on is north from Selhurst Park Road and then turn off towards the bottom of Dunction Hill as the traffic is normally quick fast as other have said, which is a shame as I have always fancied riding from Chichester to the Mulberry pub just up from Northchaple and back.

Hahaha!! I just spoke to my MD and he drove down from here at the same time I did. I arrived at the circuit at just gone 10am. He followed the directions down the A283 and A285 then queued for the car park. He got into the circuit at 12.30!!!
Even with my blowout I definitely did better there. Thanks again for the local knowledge.
