broke a mech and hanger today, joy of joys
been through about four other mechs lately, and numerous hangers.
    cracked frames
    lots of bent rotors
    thousands of knackered tubes

  • One of my pivot bolts has an old wheelnut holding it on, it's been like that for a while now.

  • I always wish I had taken pics of my helmet and Malt 2 after I obliterated it (and most of myself) on a tree. Pretzled wheels, bent frame, looked great!

  • I have posted this before, but no harm doing it again. Snapped carbon bar after clipping a metal gate post. I'm very careful tthrough tight gaps now!

Snapped the drive-side crank in half on my rat-bike yesterday. That was the first thing I've broken in a couple of years apart from obvious stuff like torn tyres and pringled rotors. Not the kind of thing you want to happen coming out of a junction in front of a bus, but I probably had it coming.

  • My avatar - a truly shagged jockey wheel! But I'm not very destructive on bike parts. Over the last few years I've a pringled wheel, a few blown seals, a cavitated rear shock, snagged brake hose, bent brake lever. Just the usual.

I was pretty lucky, didn't hit my hand. Clipped the gate by roughly 2mm, took a little chunk out of the lock-on collar from the grip. Hurt my head and ankle instead though
  • Ooooh, millions of things over the years. I guess I've basically broken every bike part I've owned, eventually.
Here's the most recent thing - one of the suspension linkages on my Marin wolfridge...

    Oh, right. Erm, no idea.
I suspect it gave when I was riding the Blaenau DH tracks, I noticed it the next time I rode the bike after being there anyway, and I was cursing myself for just not being able to hold a line through the corners - which is hardly surprising when the back end was as stable as deranged spaghetti.

I don't recall any big moment when it went, so it could have gone before the Dh session even I guess.
the material looked to have very large crystals by the break, so I don't think the forging had worked properly.
It was replaced, no questions asked by Marin anyway.

That's what they do. Lifetime guarantee.

Mate of mine used his old Marin Wolf Ridge for all his riding, XC to downhill racing, not surprised to say it cracked, and he got a brand new frame from Marin. Of course, he didn't tell them what he used it for.

Also, I've just been inspecting my mech after breaking it today, it seems it's more broken/bent than I had hoped, see if you can spot the problem :p

This one has been brought back from the dead once before after a pretty similar event, think it's time to retire it now.

Oh, and the threads on the hanger bolt are stripped now as well.

  • Nothing unusual for me, just bent mechs & hangars, a few dinged rims, everything else I could put down to normal wear & tear, drivetrain & bearings, unserviceable freehubs & hub bearings, that kind of thing. Mainly seems to be me that comes off worse if I ride into something, last major off left me with a whole bunch of bruises and a mashed rotator cuff.
