Giant Yukon creaking

My bike has started creaking slightly. It sounds like it's coming from the crank (I think it's called), the part that connects the pedals and front sprockets etc.
Am I in trouble? Is it going to be a big job? I have a long cycle planned for 2 weeks time (80miles) and I dont need it collapsing on me during that!
I'm quite mechanically switched on, but have never done work on bikes.
