Evening All,

Just signed up as I'm looking to start commuting to and from work, possible using a folding bike as there will likely be a short train journey involved.

I managed to find some 'thoughts' on folding bikes on google - http://www.totalinnertubes.com/blog/the ... s-use-them , however i would likely be on the bike for 10-12 miles each way.

Have you guys had any experience riding that distance on a folding bike?

Cheers

  • I've done a few 60 mile or so rides on a Dahon D7 folder no problem. I did fit ergon grips to the handlebars to make it more comfortable though.
  • Thats an impressive amount of mileage, i suspect my 12miles will be just fine then :)
  • Go for it!

Yes that's not a problem. Done that and more on the Brommie. I have some little stubble bar ends for change of hand position. I've also read tales of people doing alpine passes on bromtons

    Brompton S Type

  • I commute by train and my Brompton is ideal for folding into the smallest spaces. Although my commute after the train isn't as long as yours, I have completed several long rides (up to 71 miles max so far) on the Brompton without any problems. Bromptons can be faster and more versatile than you may at first think!

  • It seems then that a folding bike would be an OK commuter, i guess the best thing to do now is try one out!

Im not sure how effecient it will be compared to a full Road Bike, but the added flexability may just be worth it.

to throw a spanner in the dahon bromptom spokes, also have a look at montague bikes, they are now doing folders with 700c wheels or u can go for the full monty and get the paratrooper, I have that bike and fitted it with slicks and it was a great commuter, use a road bike now though
Sorry its not me it's the bike ;o)
