Upgrading from 3x9 Truvativ to XT or similar chainset.

Hello all,

I've got a '09 Carrera Fury, got it off the 'Bay a while ago for the princely sum of £200 (bargain), and I replaced worn Truvativ Blaze chain-rings with some Deore ones, all has been working fine, except even though they have been indexed & cleaned a few times I can feel a drop off in performance. So I want to get a new chainset & BB.

I'm gonna hopefully get a 3x9 XT Chainset & BB 2nd hand from somewhere, maybe new BB. And then I have seen you can get specific 2x9 Shimano Saint shifters & mechs. My plan is to drop the granny ring as I never use it, even living in the peaks I've got no need for it. I can keep my old 9 spd cassette as it's fairly recent, but I have a SRAM chain.

So as far as I know (and I don't know much) I have to;

get the BB shell faced at the LBS,
get XT BB and crankset fitted
drop the granny ring
then install all shifters & mechs
then set limit screws and sort indexing.

Is that about it? Are there any issues with compatibility that folk can see?

Cheers in advance _Dan.

    No need to change the left hand shifter to go 2x.....no need to change right hand either if your keeping the same number of gears.......

    Why Saint, you going downhilling - on an HT? Any 3 speed shifter will work with 2x.

  • Well the kit I have @ the mo is a bit knackered and could do with being replaced. The Saint shifters n mechs are dedicated 2x9 so I thought it may be better suited to a home-made 2x9 setup, also they look awesome :D

    It's gonna need replacing anyway, so I want to go for XT and my thinking was that mixing a bit of Saint in there couldn't do any harm. I thought that I may be able to get a better chainline with a 2x9 mech, but have just realised that I would need the chainrings closer in towards the frame for that.

    I may just end up going with SRAM x7 or X9 if the general consensus is just to drop the granny ring off a 3x9 setup and adjust the limits on the mechs, as there is a lot more of it about on Ebay.

    When going 2x9 most just drop the big ring, as they then do 90% of the work in the middle ring the chainline works fine, no reason not to just drop your granny and then use the middle ring and only the big ring when towarsd the higher gears at the rear.....

    2x specific is nice to have but not at all crucial! Most saint stuff seems to be a mix and match of XT/XTR and the odd bit of SLX thrown in, no idea on the specifcs of shifters.
