I am trying to build a bike for a friend and have decided that the alfine http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k896/a ... ilver.html could be the gear of choice. My questions are as follows:
Can i used any shimano shifter or does it have to be the Alfine? (does it have its own ratio?)
Do i need to buy the add on pack? http://www.bike-discount.de/shop/k896/a ... pouts.html Or is this ONLY for vert D/O'?
Im thinking of getting a pompetamine frame for him from One one or similar and making him a little CX bike. Any info as to what id need would be rerally appreciated.
Regards
Matthew

from the info provided you will need the add-on kit for the dropouts that the frame has.
re the shifter never tied any other than the alfine."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

From a friend who had an Alfine and broke the shifter, you need an Alfine shifter (or at least neither a stnd Shimano 8 or 9 worked as he tried both while waiting on the new one)Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I wonder if a friction thumb shifter would work? Just a thought though being a gearbox it need to be properly indexed.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

Might be a bit of a coincidence OP, but I'm about to start an IGH bike build myself using an Alfine 8.
I've done several aready. Proceed only if weight is not an issue - the finished build will be heavy.
The anti-rotation spacers are required to prevent the cassette joint plate (CJP) from spinning around and hence, mess up shifting. The blue and green ones are for vertical dropouts and maintains the CJP in a horizontal-ish position for cable routing along the chainstay; there is another set for horizontal slot dropouts or track ends:

The Alfine 8 IGH is compatible with Alfine 8 and Nexus 8 shifters (there is a trigger, combo brake/trigger, and a gripshift vesion). The Shimano IGHs have a different cable pull so will not be compatible with any other shifter made by Shimano (apart from friction shifters and modded shifters).
If you want run dropbars then go for the Versa 8 brifters (made by SunRace, I believe). They feel like cheap lightweight plastic in the hand but work extremely well when installed on the bike.0
