Keeping Rockshox 2.5 Gate cap in place

Hi all,
I'm having a spot of bother with the little "2.5 gate" cap which fits onto the top of the floodgate adjustment on my Reba RL forks. I think it is just a dust cap, to stop mud and dirt getting in and clogging it up.
So I have lost the cap a couple of times now but flukily managed to find it again, does anyone have any tips on how to keep the thing in place? I still want to be able to remove it so the forks can be serviced in future so glueing it in isn't an option.
I have checked the manual but it only really focuses on servicing and assembly, not keeping the cap in place!
Here you can see where the cap goes...
Here's the cap itself, I guess the rubber ring is meant to hold it in place but isn't doing a great job as I've only had the bike a couple of months.
And here's the shock with the cap on...
Any tips or ideas?
Many thanks in advance.

it does not actually need to be there.
a bit of oil would help though."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Thanks Nick.
Although I understand its not essental, I would like to keep it in to keep the mud out. Bit confused how the oil would keep it in place though? Is it not more likely to slip out when oiled up?

it can help get things into the correct place and make a better seal."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
