Hi guys,

I'm on the lookout for a bike around the £500-650 price point. I was wondering how the GT Avalanche 1.0 2010 stacks up to the usual competitors (boardman, RR 8.1). It was supposedly a £700 bike back in the day and has the shimano gears which I prefer over SRAM.

Advantage of the boardman is that is it seems fairly light for a bike at this price point. Not sure how like the GT is in comparison. I can get the Boardman for £550.

RR 8.1 is supposed to have the best spec at £500, but the other bikes are discounted now so perhaps they are better buys.

These are three very good bikes for the money - the GT is heavier, but has a stiffer, tougher frame and will take a 130mm fork (the one on may be extendable).

If you are into harder riding the GT would be the best bet. The Boardman gets a good air fork for the money. Whatever fits and feels best from those two!
  • hi logit.is that the boardman comp for £550.i have only seen that at £650
  • Thanks supersonic, it'll be difficult to try the GT but i'll give the boardman a go and see how i like it. I think i'll be swayed by the lighter weight.

Amilo - yep the comp for £550. That included a 10% british cycling discount and 7.5% NHS discount.

You sure you can get both, it's usually one or the other.
