8 Speed Bike - 27T Sprocket?

Hi all,

I recently had my Specialized Allez 18 nicked from my garage, I had put a 9 speed 12-27T Ultegra cassette on it. I've replaced it with a used Trek 1.1 (8 speed) but I'd potentially like a 27t sprocket on this also, but just realised there's sod all available for 8 speeds. Is there anything I could do without breaking the bank? If it's to be a ballache I'll leave it - as the bike is mainly for commuting now, but I do the odd sportive/club run and the extra teeth can come in handy.

Any suggestions appreciated, thanks.

NOt exactly sure about this but you might be able to use some of the Shimano Alivio spec stuff if your rear derailler will accomodate it. An alivio 8 speed derailler should be easy enough to pick up on the well known auction site.

  • Thanks for the replies! 11-28 would be even better - but not sure if my derailleur would reach that far(?). It's a Trek 1.1 with Sora, what do you think?

    Thanks for the info!

Dunno,I run my 28 with a roadised MTB station hack, not tried it with a short cage derailleur. I think Shimano build in quite a bit of tolerance to the stated max teeth etc so if your sora is rated upto 27, you can probably get away with 28 with a bit of tinkering on the stop screws.

  • I might risk it then, for the price it seems worth a gamble.

    Thanks!

Shimano short cage rear mech are usually OK with 28 big sprocket
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Great, thankyou for the advice. I will give it a go then!
