Mountain Bike Padded Shorts?

I am just getting started mountain biking and going out every night, it is becoming a right pain in the backside literally. James Westphal & Dr Kenneth Noisewater are also two unhappy bunnies. Could someone therefore recommend a decent brand of shorts or trousers, they don't need to have any leg protection as I am only riding minor trails but definately require a padded posterior. Cheap and cheerful ideally. Cheers

  • If you're just getting started then the chances are I'll become less uncomfortable as time goes on and you're body gets used to the saddle. That said a pair of padded shorts is a good idea. You can buy padded undershorts which you can wear with any shorts you want or buy a pair of mtb shorts with an attached liner shorts. I have a pair of Endura Humvees which come with attached padded shorts and they are fantastic. Many people on here agree. Surprisingly the padded undershorts from Aldi I bought ages ago are very comfortable.
  • Yep. Decent saddle and padded undershorts. In my case it's Endura MT500 and Humvee (summer) and Fox Evolution 3/4 (winter)

Under shorts will do fine if you have a pair of shorts you are happy to ride in. Personally I like the Fox liners. They're about £30 online. Worth it though as they're mega comfy and well made. I am a 33/34 waist and fit a large perfectly, if that helps with sizing.

  • Yep - another vote for the Fox ones

Undershorts. dhb ones from Wiggle are under £20 and are pretty good. Bit on the snug side but they do the trick.

Got some better Sugoi ones the other week but they were best part of twice the price.

Endura padded boxer shorts are about £10 at CRC I have some and they do the job for shorter rides, anything over 30 miles though I would wear better padded ones.
  • I have a couple of pairs of Altura undershorts from years back - they were OK - tend not to use them these days as I have developed the required calouses and hardened skin on my posterior and I had my testicles removed from lack of use. Smooth as an action man and no more issues.

I find bibshorts far more comfy than anything with a waistband, YMMV. DHB always get good reviews. I like Gore, not cheap though.
  • Your arse will toughen up. The cheaper the shorts the crappier the liner will be. Personally id go for something like the Altura progel (not too pricey) and then what ever over shorts you want.

The Aldi shorts have a Coolmax pad in them which is what you would find in a lot more expensive pair.

I have 3 pairs of various shorts and tights with this pad and they are fine.

I also have some Altura Pro Gel shorts and to be honest there is not a huge difference on the comfort front.
Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"
  • Does anyone know if Aldi constantly stock these or is it just whatever stuff they can get cheap at the time. You can't beat finding a motorbike helmet for sale between the oranges and frozen pizza.

I have Endura Humvees and a pair of Btwin Rockrider XC's and found the Endura shorts are brilliant however I think the Rockrider liner was much better and I will be buying some more in the future.
