Best Speed Camera Detector

Ok, the time has come to purchase a speed camera detector - one that will forewarn of fixed cameras certainly, but I wondered if any can also detect mobile ones?

Any advice other than 'stick to the speed limit!' ? I'm a cautious driver, but my livelihood will be under threat if I pick up any more points.

  • A lot of sat nav devices will have fixed sites on the mapping. Not sure about mobile sites..

You do kind of answer your own question though! Surely as a cautious driver you wouldn't be in need of such devices!!

Set your satnav to bleep away when you're above the speed limit?

    This.
    And cruise control.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.
  • thanks all,

Yes, I know there are no excuses, but it's easy to nudge up a few marks above the limit, especially in a 30.

I don't have a sat nav currently, nor cruise control; just use my smart phone, but probably time to get one!

Can't comment on the quality of the app, as I've never used it.

    I'd assume http://www.amazon.co.uk/TomTom-Start-Cl ... 436&sr=8-1 is a little more reliable.

As anecdotal evidence, the majority of people I know with speed trap 'sensors' seem to have accrued points, owing to the device giving them a false sense of security.

In any event I'd have a look at petrolheads forums, or similar, if you're keen on the sensor, as they'll have a lot more experience than us folk.

I think it's illegal to use a device that actually detects the speed cameras so I doubt you'll find one on a reputable site. In notts they publish the planned whereabouts of the mobile cameras and in any case they mostly stick to a few well known locations. If you are driving further afield i guess the best advice is be observant (and stick to the limit). But arguing that it's easy to be over the limit especially in a 30 zone is worrying. I can understand a bit of speeding on a motorway where all the traffic is motorised and going in the same direction, but shouldn't you thinking about speeds that are safe for other road users in built up areas? You ride a bike after all.

Well, yes, of course, I'll try and be a little more perfect in future.

    Thanks for the advice all.

A 30 would be the last place to speed as that is where you are most likely to encounter a pedestrian and particularyl children!

60, dual carriageway or motorway I could understand but a 30 is a definite no no in my book.
  • If you're talking about laser/radar detectors then there is no point as the laser is probably already on you.

roadangle stuff has mobile site warnings though -> but of course that relies on it not being a new site.

sheesh! I bet you stand on the road side with a hi viz vest and clipboard doing surveys for the good of the neighbourhood! ;)

Ok already, I shall not transgress again, thanks for the advice folks.

No need to buy a dedicated satnav.

Or you could go old skool and set your watch 10 minutes ahead, and organise yourself better.

Good idea, shouldn't be too hard as there are actually millions of drivers in the UK with no points on their licence. It's not difficult you know.

You asked on a forum where people have their squishy bits on the outside of their chosen transport how best to make their lives even more hazardous, they respond with predictable antipathy to your sociopath tendencies and you are bored? F***wit.
  • F***wit? Really? Don't think that's a little harsh? I hazard a guess you wouldn't say that to me personally - maybe send me a PM if you disagree.

As for 'sociapath' - oh purleese. Some people are so desperate to be offended! I'm just after some advice on a good camera detector. I don't need the po-faced brigade sniping away - we're all human and we all fall a little short from time to time no? I got clocked at 33 in a 30.

Anyway, I'm sure you're a smashing chap in real life.

Never say behind someone's back what you won't say to their face. This is the first time I've felt strongly enough to resort to insults on line I think. You asked for advice. You got responses you didn't like. You responded in a way that my teenaged kids might. You've been nicked for a crime, albeit a minor one in the eyes of the law. I have had a similar experience. I went to the course, did my best to learn from it, and try to continue to be aware of those lessons. Why? Because i understand the physics behind collisions and recognise that the v squared bit of the energy in a collision is critical to the damage you do. So only doing a bit over the 30 limit is WAY worse than only doing a bit over 70. Instead of this, your response is to seek to circumvent the law because you don't fancy the consequences. I find that unacceptable. Is that more measured?
  • First time? Blimey! see what I mean about easily offended!? So you are a transgresser also? SHAME ON YOU!!!!!! There are cyclists out there and you DIDN'T CARE ABOUT THEIR LIVES! (btw - how am I looking to circumvent the law exactly?)

Childish responses - for sure, but I guess I reckoned on not having to fend off the pedant, the sanctimonious and the holier than thou. Then, it is an internet forum so I should know better.

Anyways, sorry if I have offended - I was just poking fun a little but guess it came across wrong.

    Thanks for the advice y'all.
  • Just to back that up, seriously, no hard feelings and sorry for anyone who thinks I am trying to get away with driving like a tw@t.

Here's a picture to cheer us all up:

Actually, no real offence taken. I argue with lots of people i drink beer with. Offer's open if you head this way but i can't promise to be polite all the time.

Really?? I'm sure you'd do a lot less damage crashing at 31mph than you would at 71mph. And the v squared bit you talk about I only presume you mean velocity? Which energy equation in a collision are you talking about?

    Kinetic energy = 0.5 x mass x velocity(squared) I imagine.

If that is the equation he is talking about then more energy will be produced at 70mph than 30mph. So his argument that going over 30 is way worse than 70 isn't valid.

But that energy equation isn't valid anyway as it doesn't account for things like tyre friction coefficient, crash structures that disparate energy at different rates etc etc.

Everyone I know who has a 'speed camera detector' has got points since using them. (A vast n=3 survey).

None of those are colleagues by the way...
